In a time when trust in leadership is eroding across institutions and industries, Rear Admiral Mike Studeman (Ret.) believes the greatest crisis we face isn’t geopolitical — it’s moral.
On this powerful episode of The Leadership Crucible Podcast, Chief Randy Bruegman sits down with Admiral Studeman to explore the root of our leadership failures: a breakdown in character. Drawing from 35 years of military service, including as Director of Intelligence for both the U.S. Indo-Pacific and Southern Commands, Studeman brings uncommon clarity to a subject that’s often overlooked — how everyday decisions shape the kind of leader you become, and why integrity isn’t optional when the stakes are high.
From the story of a cracked windshield and a summer’s worth of babysitting money to commanding global intelligence operations in some of the world’s most complex environments, Studeman illustrates how "iron integrity" is forged long before you’re in the spotlight. He challenges listeners to consider the small, unseen moments where moral courage is built — and lost.
In this conversation, you’ll learn:
Why moral compromise at the top undermines trust at every level
How to lead through ambiguity while maintaining clarity and courage
The critical distinction between what you know, what you don’t, and what you assess — and why that matters in decision-making
What it means to speak truth to power, and how to do it without losing influence
How to raise the next generation of leaders who value character over charisma
Studeman also unpacks the concept behind his book Might of the Chain: Forging Leaders of Iron Integrity, inspired by a Navy poem that underscores the idea that the strength of any mission — or society — depends on the strength of each individual. Whether you’re leading a team, a business, or a nation, this conversation is a call to rethink how we define leadership — not by position, but by principle.
As Chief Bruegman and Admiral Studeman reflect, leadership isn’t about going fast — it’s about going far. And that requires a chain of leaders strong enough to bear the weight of responsibility, decision by decision.
